Here is a truly unique fossil. First of all, this is a near complete ischium (pelvic bone arranged towards the rear of the dinosaur under the ilium, this is one of the three bones that make up the area where the femur condyle goes on the hip). We believe this ischium is from a Thescelosaur. The ischium is in great condition and is vary rarely found. The unique feature of this ischium is the number of bite marks on it. There are over 15 different bite marks on the ischium. One of the bites even left the serration pattern of the dinosaur that was chewing on it! We have taken close-up pictures of the bite mark area with the serration pattern. This type of bite is rarely preserved and is the best way to tell what type of dinosaur was chewing on the bone. We measured the distance between the serration's (denticles) and the dinosaur chewing on this ischium was a Nanotyrannus. This is truly a unique fossils that has a fossil record of behavior of a Nanotyrannus.
Dating to circa late cretaceous period. Measures 290mm on the outer curve. |
