Ancient Egyptian glazed faience plaque of Quedesh
A rare faience plaque depicting the Goddess Quedesh standing on the back of a lioness, arms out spread holding two feline creatures with tails in the form of lotus flowers. A very rare depiction. The overall condition of the plaque is superb with majority of its turquoise glaze intact. The reverse appears to have remnants of a silver patina, the plaque may have been inset into a silver mount and worn.

Kadesh (Quedesh) "the holy one", was another form of Astarte. As the "mistress of all the gods", and the patroness of the "unmoral" women connected with her temples, she emphasized the licentious phase of the character of Ashtoreth which was so warmly denounced by the Hebrew prophets. The Egyptians depicted her as a moon goddess, generally depicted standing nude on the back of a lioness, which indicated that she was imported from the Hittites.

Dating to the Persian period circa 525-404 BC

Measures 63mm height / 35mm width. 110mm inc custom stand

Ex-private West Australian collection.
